2009-10 RADFORD MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE
RADFORD, Va. – Returning four starters from a team that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Radford head men's basketball coach Brad Greenberg has put together a schedule that includes dates against perennial powers Duke, Kansas and Louisville as well as a 15-game home slate with a chance to host an ESPN nationally televised contest.
“Fierce competitors desire the challenges and relish the opportunity of testing themselves against elite teams,” commented Greenberg, the 2009 Big South and State Coach of the Year. “Playing at Duke, Louisville and Kansas – three of college basketball's most successful programs has our staff and team excited and motivated.”
The 2009 Big South Champions will open the 2009-10 campaign with a brief homestand beginning with a 7 p.m. contest against Patriot League member Navy at the Dedmon Center.
Tied with UConn for the longest road-winning streak in the nation, the Highlanders will begin a five-game stretch away from home Nov. 21 with their first-ever trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on the Duke Blue Devils. The third longest road swing in school history will also feature tilts at Duquesne, Winthrop, Presbyterian and a Dec. 9 meeting with the Kansas Jayhawks at historic Allen Fieldhouse, a place the 2008 National Champions have reeled off a nation-best 41 straight triumphs.
Radford will return to the Dedmon Center Sunday, Dec. 13 to entertain Roanoke College, before taking on its second of three straight in-state foes James Madison in Harrisonburg on Dec. 19 and hosting William & Mary three days later at 7 p.m.
Two days after the holiday break, the Highlanders will travel to Louisville, Ky., to square off with Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals, a 2009 Final Four participant, at Freedom Hall.
After concluding 2009 with a Dec. 30 home contest against George Mason, a 2006 Final Four participant, Radford will close the regular season with 16 of its last 17 games against Big South competition.
Following a Jan. 30 contest at UNC Asheville, Radford will play its final eight regular season contests in the state of Virginia, including six home games. Along with trips to VMI (Feb. 2) and Liberty (Feb. 16), which finished second and third in the league behind the Highlanders last season, Radford will host an ESPNU Bracketbusters game on Feb. 20.
The Bracketbuster matchups, game times and network assignments will be announced in early February. For more information on Radford's first-ever appearance in the ESPNU Bracketbuster extravaganza visit www.espnubracketbusters.com.
“With George Mason, Duquesne, JMU, Navy, William & Mary, and a Bracketbuster game, our non conference schedule is perhaps the most difficult in school history. It may very well be the toughest non-conference slate of any team in the Commonwealth,” Greenberg said.
The Highlander's 2009-10 Division I non-conference opponents combined to post a 181-91 (.665) record a year ago, with six of the eight making postseason appearances.
The 2010 Big South Men's Basketball Tournament will begin March 2 with the top four seeds hosting a quarterfinal contest. The regular season champions will host the semifinals with the championship game being played on the home court of the highest seed remaining on ESPN2.
