Box Score
RADFORD, Va. – Sophomore Courtney Poole (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to lift Radford over Saint Francis, 3-1, in the Highlanders' home opener Sunday afternoon from RU Field Hockey Field.
The win for the Highlanders (2-2) snapped a two-match slide and improved their home record to 28-3 since 2000.
With the scored knotted at 1-1 and Radford threatening, Poole knocked in the game-winner with just under 10 minutes on the clock (60:18). On the play, junior Kay Tufts' (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) initial shot was stopped by Red Flash keeper Sara Dittman, but Poole was right on the doorstep to handle the rebound and put it in the cage.
Poole, notching her first multi-goal match of her career, gave the Highlanders a two-goal cushion (3-1) six minutes later. Junior Becca Devlin (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) sent a cross from the right that was redirected by junior Lara Cariker (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) to Poole, who backhanded the ball into a wide-open cage for her team-leading third goal.
Radford out shot Saint Francis 24-6, 13-1 in the second half, and held a slight advantage in corners, 8-7. Dittman finished with 13 saves for the Red Flash, while Jen Wisniewski (Centreville, Va./Westfield) stopped three shots for the Highlanders.
Sophomore Melissa Register (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) put the Highlanders on the board 9:24 into the match. Centered in front of the cage, Register collected Devlin's shot from the right and pounded it home for her first collegiate goal.
Radford's defense withstood a late flurry by Saint Francis (0-5) to go into the half with the 1-0 lead. Wisniewski helped the cause making all three of her saves during the first period flurry.
Saint Francis' Julia Moore tied the match in the 46th minute when she slipped behind Wisniewski and redirected Tia Dudukovich's cross into an empty cage. It was the Red Flash's only shot of the period as Radford's defense buckled down and did not allow another attempt the rest of the match.
Radford hits the road on Wednesday, Sept. 16 to face No. 2 North Carolina at 6 p.m.
