FIELD HOCKEY DROPS TOUGH FIRST ROUND MATCH TO CAL, 3-2

BOX SCORE

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Radford fought tooth and nail with California for 70 minutes but fell short in the first round of the NorPac Tournament, 3-2, Thursday evening from Davidson's Belk Turf Field.

Trailing 3-1, junior Melissa RegisteR gave Radford life, putting home a feed from senior Lara Cariker (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) on a corner with under three minutes left in the match.

The Highlanders continued to threaten until the final buzzer, but a shot by Cariker was saved and two runs into the circle were cleared out by the Bears.

The Highlanders will take on Pacific tomorrow, Nov. 4 at 6:30 pm in the consolation round.

Jennifer Wisniewski made some key saves to keep the Highlanders within striking distance and finished the match with nine.

Cal took a 3-1 lead into halftime, scoring a pair of goals after Radford tied the game in the 11th minute on a goal by senior Megan Lenhardt.

In the 14th minute, Megan Psyllos ripped one off the pads during a corner allowing Cal to retake the lead. Andrea Earle gave them a two-goal advantage on a breakaway topping her shot over an on rushing Wisniewski.

Following the third goal, Radford controlled possession for the majority of the rest of the stanza and had several scoring opportunities, but Cal keeper Maddie Hand made a couple of saves and the Bears blocked some of the Highlanders' chances.

Just before the half, Cal had a golden opportunity to put its fourth goal on the board, but Wisniewski made two saves and senior Becca Devlin cleared a high rebound off the line during a four-shot flurry. Wisniewski finished the half with four saves and Hand recorded three.

Megan Shimojima opened the scoring for the Bears scoring 2:33 into the match, tipping in a cross from Rachell Comeau.

Lenhardt tied the game on Radford's first corner and shot, sneaking it just inside the far post off the insert from junior Lynsey Daughtrey.
