Day One Results

KNOXVILLE, Tenn –
The Radford swimming and diving team turned in a strong performance on day one of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, Thursday at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

The Highlander foursome of Julia Hoffman (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), Colleen Miller (Kent Island, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Madison Mantiply (Woodridge, Va./Woodridge) and Anna Milotte (Sterling, Va./Park View) touched the wall in ninth place with a season-best time of 1:43.73 in the 400-yard medley relay.

Whitney Friend (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), Ashley Maness (Conway, S.C./Carolina Forest), Kate Keck (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and Kathryn Ruch (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) each recorded a season or personal best in the 500-yard freestyle. Friend swam a time of 5:27.38, while Maness posted a time of 5:27.88. Keck touched the wall in 29th place with a time of 5:33.41. Ruch posted a personal-best time of 5:39.56.

The 200-yard individual medley saw the Highlanders record five personal bests. Freshman Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) just missed the consolation final by two seconds with a time of 2:11.22. CeCe de la Garza (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) bettered her best time by five seconds with a mark of 2:20.37. Kristi Freund (Newnan, Ga./Northgate) eclipsed her best time by three seconds with a time of 2:23.36. Kaitlyn Baker (Winchester, Va./James Woods) and Carly Dean (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) each recorded a personal bests with times of 2:30.37 and 2:34.58, respectively.

In the 50-yard freestyle, each Radford swimmer swam in under 27 seconds and finished with a personal best. Mantiply recorded a time of 25.56, while Milotte posted a time of 25.84. Erin Clark (Richmond, Va./Saint Gertrude) lowered her personal-best time by two seconds with a time of 25.88, while senior co-captain Mandy Smith (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) dropped a second off her personal best with a time of 25.90. Miller took eight-tenths of a second off her personal best with a time of 26.01. Janelle Colie (Herndon, Va./Herndon) lowered her personal best by two seconds with a time of 26.64. Dean also recorded a new personal best with a time of 26.82.

On the one-meter board, Katie Shaffer (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) advanced to the finals with a score of 211.75. In the finals, Shaffer posted a score of 204.33 to finish seventh.

To end day one of competition, Radford’s 400-medley relay team of Erica Kappert (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), Smith, Miller and Turner bested their season-best time by almost two seconds with a time of 4:14.11, which placed them ninth.

The Highlanders will be back in action tomorrow for Day 2 of the CCSA Championship starting with preliminaries at 10.00 a.m.
