Highlanders Make a Splash on Day 2 of CCSA Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
– A consolation finals appearance and five all-time top-10 swims highlighted day two of competition for the Radford swimming and diving team at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championship, Friday at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

Freshman Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) advanced to the consolation finals by swimming a personal-best of 4:39.81 in the preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley. In the finals, Turner dropped her personal-best to 4:38.43, which was good for 16th place. Also in the 400 IM, Ashley Maness (Conway, S.C./Carolina Forest) recorded a personal-best with a time of 4:51.51.

Madison Mantiply (Woodridge, Va./Woodridge), Erica Kappert (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Erin Clark (Richmond, Va./Saint Gertrude) each posted a season-best time in the 100-yard backstroke. Mantiply dropped almost three seconds off her personal-best with a time of 1:09.39. Clark touched the wall in 1:06.06 to finish 23rd and record a new season-best time. Kappert reached the wall in 1:06.07 to record a new season-best.

Kappert also swam a season-best time of 1:04.08 in the 100-yard butterfly. Janelle Colie (Herndon, Va./Herndon) improved on her season-best time by almost five seconds with a time of 1:05.39 in the 100-yard butterfly.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, each Radford swimmer swam a new personal-best by two or more seconds. Cece de la Garza (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) recorded a time of 1:13.51 while Julia Hoffman (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) posted a time of 25.84. Kaitlyn Baker (Winchester, Va./James Woods) dropped her personal-best time by three seconds with a time of 1:14.61, while Kristi Freund (Newnan, Ga./Northgate) lowered her personal-best by three seconds with a time of 1:14.66.

Radford’s quartet of Kate Keck (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor), Mandy Smith (Annandale, Va./Falls Church), Turner and Maness finished eighth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:08.90, which bettered their previous best by 16 seconds.
