RADFORD, Va. – Thomas Dehaen (Zwevegem, Belgium) of the Radford men’s tennis team has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week and The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played Jan. 25-Jan. 31, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

“Thomas is going to be a player recognized at the National D1 level before his career at Radford is over,” said Radford head coach Mike Anderson. “He has already gotten a win against a nationally-ranked player (a senior at Vanderbilt) and has wins at South Florida, Central Florida and Yale as well. He gives us a solid performer at the top of our lineup.”

Dehaen finished the Highlanders’ appearance in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend a perfect 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position and 1-1 at the No. 2 doubles position against nationally-ranked Yale (No. 73) and Vanderbilt (No. 48).

After teaming with Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia / Birotechnika Grammar School) to defeat Yale’s No. 2 tandem of John Huang and Marc Powers, Dehaen defeated Huang in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-3. He capped off the Highlanders’ first-ever appearance in the prestigious event with a singles victory over No. 71 Vijay Paul (Vanderbilt), 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).

Radford will enjoy a lengthy break (25 days) from action before returning to the court Feb. 25 at Charlotte.
