Swimming & Diving Comes Home Ninth at CCSA Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A fourth place finish in the three-meter and ninth place finish in 400-freestyle relay propelled the Radford swimming and diving team to a ninth place showing at the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships.
The Highlanders scored 104 points team points, missing eighth place by just one point.
In the three-meter diving event, Katie Shaffer (Virginia Beach, Va./Oceanside) recorded a score of 236.88 to advance to the finals, where she posted a dive of 40 points to finish just out of the medals. She was only one point away from becoming the first Highlander to ever medal at season-ending event.
Radford's 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Mandy Smith (Annandale, Va./Falls Church), Madison Mantiply (Woodridge, Va./Woodridge), Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) and Kate Keck (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) finished with a time of 3:42.33.
After two false starts in the first four heats of the 100-yard freestyle, Mantiply led the Highlander contingent when she recorded a personal-best time of 56.91, while Keck clocked in at a personal-best of 57.11. Anna Milotte (Sterling, Va./Park View) lowered her season-best time by six-tenths of second with a time of 57.36. Julia Hoffman (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), Erin Clark (Richmond, Va./Saint Gertrude), Carly Dean (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) and Janelle Colie (Herndon, Va./Herndon) dropped their season-best times by at least two seconds.
Turner touched the wall in 2:14.27 in the 200-yard backstroke, bettering her previous best by two seconds.
Friend lowered her personal best by almost three seconds with a time of 2:15.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Senior co-captain Erica Kappert (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) dropped almost three seconds off her season best with a time of 2:20.85 in the same event.
Also In the 200-yard breaststroke, five Radford swimmers set new season standards. Ashley Maness (Conway, S.C./Carolina Forest) recorded a time of 2:36.95, while Hoffman posted a time of 2:38.77. Kristi Freund (Newnan, Ga./Northgate) dropped her personal-best time by nine seconds with a mark of 2:40.66, while Kaitlyn Baker (Winchester, Va./James Woods) lowered her personal-best by five seconds with a time of 2:43.04. Kathryn Ruch (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) hit the wall in 2:48.00 to eclipse her personal-best by three seconds.
