Parakhouski Repeats as Player of the Year; Lynch-Flohr, Smith and Martin also Honored

RADFORD, Va. – Along with Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) earning his second straight Big South Player of the Year honor, Radford's Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) was named to the league's second team, Blake Smith (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian) was voted to the all-freshman squad and Phillip Martin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) was selected the Scholar Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference office Monday.

The 10 league head coaches and league's media panel voted on the all-conference teams.

In addition to leading the country in rebounding (13.2) and double-doubles (24), Parakhouski ranks among national leaders in scoring (10th/21.6), field-goal percentage (10th/.583) and blocks per game (33rd/2.2). Among conference statistical leaders, the 6-11 center leads the way in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage, double-doubles, offensive rebounding (5.27) and defensive rebounding (7.93), while ranking third in blocks and second in minutes per game (34.3).

“Art Parakhouski will rightfully be remembered as one of the premier talents to ever play in the Big South,” said head coach Brad Greenberg. “Despite being double and triple-teamed, he has managed to be the most consistent double-double player in the country.”

Named the league's Player of the Week four times in 2009-10, Parakhouski has scored in double figures in a league-best 31 straight contests, which includes five 30-point efforts and 20 performances with at least 20 points.

Two months after recording just the second 20-20 (26 points, 20 rebounds) game in school history at Duquesne (11/29), Parakhouski charted the first 30-20 performance in the program's 36 years with 30 points and a school single-game record 22 rebounds at VMI on Feb. 2.

“He is as good a rebounder as there is in college basketball today,” Greenberg said. “I believe he will one day play in the NBA and from all indications he has a very good chance of being the first player in Radford and league history to be drafted.”

Also in the Highlanders' 111-84 victory at VMI, Parakhouski became tied for sixth quickest player in league history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, needing just 55 contests. In just two seasons, the 2009 AP All-America Honorable Mention selection ranks among Radford's career leaders in points, scoring average, rebounds, rebounding average, field-goal percentage, field goals made, free throws made and blocked shots.

Just the fourth player in Big South history to repeat as player of the year, Parakhouski is the first Highlander to win the award more than once.

Like Parakhouski, Lynch-Flohr earned a spot on an all-conference squad for the second consecutive season. The 6-8 senior forward enters the postseason averaging 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds, while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor and a team-best 72.6 percent at the free throw line.

Joey Lynch-Flohr
Lynch-Flohr, who has appeared in more games (121) than any other player in school history, ranks among league leaders in scoring, rebounding, free-throw percentage, offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding and minutes played.

“Joey is a determined and physical player who has been a three-year captain. He is a strong low post scorer and a solid rebounder, as well as an improved ballhandler and defender,” commented Greenberg.

Selected to the Big South All-Tournament team in 2009, Lynch-Flohr has reached double figures 67 times in his career and 20 times this season, including a career-high 26 points on 9 of 14 shooting at top-ranked Kansas (12/9).

Smith, the first Radford men's basketball player to earn a spot on the all-freshman team since fellow backcourt mate Amir Johnson (2006-07), is averaging 9.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals per contest, while leading the club in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.7 percent (40-for-109).

Smith_L-ville
A three-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree, Smith has scored in double figures 12 times this season, including a season-high 23 points at Gardner-Webb. Defensively, Smith has turned in three or more steals on eight separate occasions and grabbed five or more rebounds in a contest 14 times.

“Blake has had a very solid freshman year,” Greenberg said. “He's an all around player with a good feel for the game. He can pass, shoot, rebound and defend, and is the most versatile of all the All Freshman honorees.”

Martin, a three-time Big South All-Academic and Presidential Honor Roll selection, is the fourth Highlander and first since Andrey Savtchenko (2000-01) to earn Scholar Athlete of the Year. Off the court, Martin carries a 3.93 GPA as a double major in social science and philosophy and religious studies.

“Phillip is a uniquely special student-athlete who is fiercely competitive on the court, extremely focused academically and as well rounded and mature a young man as you will find,” Greenberg said.

On the floor, the 2009 CoSIDA All-District member has scored in double figures three times this season. Martin has started 40 contests in four-year career and helped lead Radford to an 18-3 record a year ago in the 21 games that he started.

The second-seeded Highlanders will host Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals of the Big South Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
