NINETY-SIX, S.C. – Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) of the Radford women’s golf team has been named to the Big South All-Conference squad, while fellow senior
Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky/Paris) earned her third straight all-academic selection, as announced Sunday evening.
The remaining All-Conference team, as well as the Golfer of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be announced on Wednesday following the final round of the 2010 Big South Women’s Golf Championships.
A two-time Big South Women’s Golfer of the Week, Leineweber enters the opening round of the Conference Championships sixth among Big South scoring leaders with a 77.38 stroke average.
In addition to finishing fifth in the league with a pair of Top-10 finishes through eight events, Leineweber led the Highlanders in scoring in 10 out of 16 rounds. Her top finish of the year came at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, where she tied for second out of 112 competitors with a 36-hole total of 147 (72-75). Leineweber’s first weekly honor came following a third-place finish at the season-opening Draper Valley Intercollegiate where she finished the two-day event at one-over 145 (72-73).
Leineweber is just the sixth player in school history to earn a spot on the all-conference squad and second in as many years as
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England/The Coleshill School) was selected in 2009.
Watts, who holds a 3.82 grade-point-average in History / Political Science, is only the second student-athlete in program history voted to the all-academic squad three times. Also a member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, Watts’ top finish came at the Draper Valley Intercollegiate where she placed tied for 11th.
Seeded fourth, Radford will begin the 54-hole/three-day Big South Women’s Golf Championships tomorrow morning at The Patriot Club. The host Highlanders will be playing in threesomes with Bucknell and Gardner-Webb beginning at 8:50 a.m.
