ROCK HILL, S.C. – Behind a four-hit shutout by Chelsea Kelley, Radford defeated Winthrop, 5-0, on ESPNU Sunday afternoon from Terry Field. With the victory, the Highlanders (31-13, 16-2 Big South) clinch the Big South regular season for the second straight year.
After Kelley, who struck out four, allowed a pair of hits to start the game, only three Eagles (two hits, one walk) reached base the rest of the contest She retired the side in four innings which included the final seven batters of the game.
The win also marked the 16th consecutive Big South series victory for the Highlanders, who are 45-4 since dropping their first two league contests to Winthrop in 2008.
At the plate, Kristen Shifflett was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI. Her long ball in the seventh, tied the career home run mark with teammate Hope Creasy.
After each team went scoreless through the first three innings, Radford broke through with a run in the fourth thanks to some heads up base running.
With one out and Shannon Keefe on first, Creasy singled to right centerfield moving Keefe to third. On the throw back into the infield, Creasy was caught between first and second. She executed an extended run down, allowing Keefe to scoot home just ahead of the throw.
Radford broke the game open with a four-run top of the seventh. Back-to-back RBI singles by Taylor Cunningham and Lauren Williams pushed it to 3-0 and Shifflett added two more with a two-run blast to centerfield.
The Highlander resume play on Wednesday, April 28 at North Carolina. The twinbill begins at 3 p.m.
