4/6/2010 2:45:23 PM | Men's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. – Radford's Art Parakhouski continues to add to his long list of postseason accolades as the 6-11 center has been named the VaSID State Player of the Year, as voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) for the 2010 University Division All-State Men's Basketball Team.
“Being named VaSID Player of the Year is a tremendous honor for Art and for Radford,” commented head coach Brad Greenberg, the 2009 VaSID State Coach of the Year. “To have one of our players recognized in this manner helps establish Radford as an extremely attractive and viable option for any prospect looking for a school that will help him develop as a player and get a quality education.”
In addition to leading the country in rebounding (13.4) and double-doubles (26), Parakhouski ranked among national leaders in scoring (15th/21.4) and field-goal percentage (7th/.581).
Named the league's Player of the Week four times in 2009-10, Parakhouski scored in double figures in a league-best 33 straight contests, which included five 30-point efforts and 20 performances with at least 20 points.
Two months after recording just the second 20-20 (26 points, 20 rebounds) game in school history at Duquesne (11/29), Parakhouski charted the first 30-20 performance in the program's 36 years with 30 points and a school single-game record 22 rebounds at VMI on Feb. 2.
Also in the Highlanders' 111-84 victory at VMI, Parakhouski became tied for sixth quickest player in league history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, needing just 55 contests. In just two seasons, the 2009 AP All-America Honorable Mention selection ranks among Radford's career leaders in points, scoring average, rebounds, rebounding average, field-goal percentage, field goals made, free throws made and blocked shots.
Just the fourth player in Big South history to repeat as player of the year, Parakhouski is the first Highlander to win the award more than once.
“We couldn't be more proud of Art and more appreciative of what he has done in his two years as a Highlander to help elevate our program's reputation in the state, region and country,” Greenberg said.
In addition to Parakhouski's Player of the Year honor, the College of William & Mary head coach Tony Shaver was selected Coach of the Year, while Liberty's Evan Gordon was tabbed Rookie of the Year.
Parakhouski was joined on the VaSID 1st-Team by junior Kevin Anderson of Richmond, junior Malcolm Delaney of Virginia Tech, senior Gerald Lee of Old Dominion, and junior Larry Sanders of VCU.
The VaSID 2nd-Team includes Denzel Bowles of James Madison, Michael Deloach of Norfolk State, David Gonzalvez of Richmond, David Schneider of William and Mary and Dana Smith of Longwood.
Honorable-mention honors went to Dorenzo Hudson of Virginia Tech, Austin Kenon of VMI, Sylven Landesberg of Virginia, Quinn McDowell of William and Mary, and Joey Rodriguez of VCU.

The purpose of the organization is to promote college athletics at all four-year institutions. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a four-year college or conference located in Virginia, and whose area of responsibility lies within the area of sports information.
VaSID sponsors All-State teams in a number of sports in both university and college divisions, which are linked to this web site. The organization also maintains Virginia state record books for baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, and softball. The VaSID organization was formed when a group of sports information directors from Virginia met at the annual CoSIDA Convention in Dallas during the summer of 1982. The organization was officially formed when the VaSID Constitution was accepted on May 3, 1983. Elected as the inaugural president of VaSID was Rich Murray of James Madison University. Jim Alnuti of the CIAA Office was elected to serve as Vice-President, while Kevin Keys held the first Secretary/Treasurer post. Serving as All-State season coordinators were Carol Hudson, Tom Baker of Virginia Commonwealth University, Debbie Davis of Radford University, and Hoke Currie of Longwood College.
