RADFORD, Va. – In addition to eight conference matches, the 2010 Radford University men's soccer schedule features road dates at Atlantic Coast Conference foes North Carolina and Virginia Tech, as announced by first-year head coach Marc Reeves Thursday.
“We are excited about our 2010 schedule,” commented Reeves, who spent the last 11 seasons at St. John's including the last four as the program's associate head coach. “It is exceptionally challenging especially being away from Cupp Stadium for a large portion of the season.”
After a three-match exhibition slate, which includes a home tilt with Appalachian State (Aug. 22), the Highlanders will kick-off Reeves' tenure with four consecutive contests away from home, beginning with their season opener Sept. 4 at Mt. St. Mary's.
Radford will continue its road trip at Marshall on Sept. 6, before concluding the longest swing of the campaign with an appearance at the Flash Gordon Motors Invitational, where the Highlanders will meet Georgia Southern (Sept. 10) and Mercer (Sept. 12).
On Sept. 18, the Highlanders will begin their 2010 home / Big South slate with a 6 p.m. match against league-rival Liberty at Cupp Stadium. A week later, Radford will entertain Longwood (Sept. 25) prior to heading back on the road for a Wednesday evening game at Davidson on Sept. 29.
“The five home games we believe will be very important to play well and try and attract a lot of RU students and local soccer community support. We have some exciting ideas to try and create a fan friendly, fun environment and home-field advantage,” Reeves said.
Following its third of just five home dates this season, an Oct. 2 meeting with Presbyterian, Radford will play five of its next six away from Cupp, including trips to 2009 Final Four participant North Carolina (Oct. 5) and New River Valley rival Virginia Tech (Oct. 27) in Blacksburg.
“Our Non Conference games will each present a great opportunity to compete against very strong opponents. The highlight will be away trips to UNC and VT, but all games will be valued equally important and exceptionally tough.”
In the middle of the season's toughest stretch, Radford will host the defending conference champs, Winthrop, in a 6 p.m. match on Oct. 16.
The Highlanders will close out the month of October with a 1 p.m. “Senior Day” match against Coastal Carolina before wrapping up the regular season at Elon (Nov. 2) and Gardner-Webb (Nov. 5).
High Point will host the 2010 Big South Men's Soccer Tournament on Nov. 11, 12 & 14 in High Point, N.C., with the champion earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
“The Big South is an excellent conference with great coaches. We look forward to testing our team and will work hard on a daily basis to elevate our program.”
