RADFORD, Va. – In addition to hosting the 2010 Big South Tournament, the women's soccer schedule will feature three first-time opponents and nine home matches, announced Monday by head coach Ben Sohrabi.
Radford will host the 2010 Big South Tournament on Nov. 4-7 at Cupp Stadium with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This will mark the first time since 2000 that Radford, a three-time conference champion, has hosted the tournament.
Three of Radford's first four matches will come against first-time foes, Southern Virginia (Aug. 21), in the season opener, along with Francis Marion (Aug. 27) and Iona (Sept. 5). The other game in that opening stretch will be at Conference USA opponent Marshall (Sept. 3).
“Starting the season on a good note is going to be important. Early in the season before school even starts we have a few games, so we definitely want to get started in a positive way,” said head coach Ben Sohrabi.
Additional non-conference opponents include home matches against Campbell (Sept. 9), Old Dominion (Sept. 12) and Longwood (Sept. 19), along with a road tilt at American University (Sept. 17).
“All of the games are going to be tough, but the real tough stretch, as far as the non-conference schedule, is going to be against Campbell, Old Dominion, Longwood and American. If we can have some success in those four games, I feel like it's going to be a positive year. I think those four matches are going to give us some really good experience going into the Big South,” stated Sohrabi.
The Highlanders will commence a season-long four game road swing at Tennessee Tech (Sept. 25), then go on to face Alabama A&M (Sept. 27). Radford wraps up the swing with its Big South opener at UNC Asheville (Oct. 1) and then heads to Clinton, S.C. for a match-up with Presbyterian (Oct. 3).
The last nine games on the slate for the Highlanders will come against Big South opponents, including back-to-back games against last year's regular season champion Liberty (Oct. 22) and tournament champion High Point (Oct. 24).
