RADFORD, Va. – Former Averett Head Coach Katrina Williams has been named Director of Women’s Basketball Operations at Radford University, as announced by third-year head coach Tajama Abraham Ngongba on Tuesday.

“I believe Coach Williams is the most qualified person we could have hired and I am expecting big contributions from her,” commented Ngongba. “It is always a plus to get a local basketball product with head coaching experience particularly at the college level.”

At Radford, Williams will organize and oversee team travel, academics, community involvement, film exchange, summer camps as well as assist with scheduling.

In just three seasons at Averett University, Williams elevated the program to new heights, including a school-record 17-9 overall mark in 2009-10, which topped the previous school standard set the year before. In addition to their overall record, the Cougars set a new program record for conference wins in each of Williams’ three years at the helm.

Along with her head coaching duties at Averett, Williams served as the athletic department’s Senior Women’s Administrator.

“She had to manage all aspects of the Averett program, which is why I am confident she will be a strong addition to our staff.”

Before accepting her position at Averett, Williams, a native of nearby Roanoke, was an assistant coach at Ferrum College. While on the Panthers’ staff, she helped head coach Bryan Harvey lead the team to a school-best 21-7 record in 2006-07. Additionally, she played a major role in the recruiting process that landed 11 freshmen on the Ferrum campus, including the 2007 USA South Conference Rookie of the Year.

A 2004 graduate of Roanoke College, Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She was a three-year standout on the Maroons basketball team after playing one season at Virginia Tech. A three-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference all-league selection, including first-team selections in 2002 and 2003, Williams was named ODAC Player of the Year in 2003, while earning honorable mention All-America honors.
