CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior goalkeeper Lisa Lubke has been named 2010 Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while the Radford women's soccer team was picked fifth in the preseason poll, announced today by the Big South office.
Lubke totaled 13 points, including five first-place votes, in earning her second consecutive Preseason Player of the Year honor.
“To get this award is a huge honor. I don't think of it as a personal award, but a team award because our team works as a whole to do so well on defense. This award will push me to work even harder this year to help us be successful again,” said Lubke.
Last year's regular season champion Liberty was tabbed as the preseason favorite, tallying five first-place votes. Charleston Southern was second with four first place votes. Holding the third and fourth spots were Coastal Carolina and last season's tournament champion, High Point, which got the other first-place vote and 69 total points. Radford rounded out the top five with 68 points.
A 2009 second-team All-Conference selection, Lubke recorded four shutouts and had a 1.10 goals-against average, stopping 82 percent of the shots she faced last season.
The league leader in saves a year ago, Lubke stopped 47 shots in conference games alone and 102 on the season. She recorded five or more saves in eight contests and led the league in saves per game (5.22) during conference play.
“I am very happy for Lisa and the University to get that type of recognition. Lisa works hard and is always trying to improve,” said head coach Ben Sohrabi.
Radford opens its 2010 campaign at home on August 21 against Southern Virginia at 7 p.m.
