ATHENS, Ohio – Radford’s defense held Saint Louis to just three shots and three different players scored as the Highlanders posted their second consecutive shutout with a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon from Peggy Pruitt Field on the campus of Ohio University.
When the final whistle blew Radford recorded its second straight shutout to start the season, a first for the Highlanders since 1989. It also marked the first 2-0 start to a season since 2006 when Radford knocked off Siena and Colgate on the road.
Seniors
Kay Tufts (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) and
Lara Cariker (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor), along with junior
Melissa Register (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) each scored their first goals of the season for Radford.
For the game, the Highlanders out shot the Billikens (0-1), 18-3 and held a 10-1 advantage in corners.
Radford (2-0) stingy defense did not allow Saint Louis a shot or corner in the first half, while it offense generated 10 shots and four corners. Despite the advantage, it took the Highlanders a little over 25 minutes to crack Billiken keeper Alex Labarge.
Tufts, who rung one off the post in the eighth minute, scored the eventual game-winner slamming a hard shot to the far post past Labarge at 25:05. Prior to that, Labarge recorded five of her seven first half saves.
Junior
Madonna Wadolowski (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), coming off a 10-assist sophomore campaign, recorded her first helper of 2010 on Tufts’ goal.
Register cushioned Radford’s slim lead with 9:30 left in the match. She took a feed from senior Cariker and knocked in a turn-around shot.
As time expired, Cariker found the back of the cage with a chip shot following a nice pass from fellow senior
Becca Devlin (Annapolis, Md./St.Mary's). Cariker also posted a game-high seven shots.
Senior
Jennifer Wisniewski (Centreville, Va./Westfield) posted her second straight shutout making her lone save in the 59th minute.
Labarge finished the contest with 10 saves for the Billikens.
The Highlanders return to Radford for its 2010 home opener welcoming Siena on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m.
