9/7/2010 4:38:14 PM | Field Hockey
RADFORD, Va. – Radford Field Hockey was recognized for their 4-0 start as they received votes in this week's 2010 Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for the first time in program history.
The Highlanders, under the direction of Jeff Woods, received 13 votes in the first regular season poll tying them with Iowa and Massachusetts for 32nd.
“It is the first time I can recall receiving votes during the season, so it's an honor to be recognized by other programs in the country,” said Woods. “It is especially rewarding for the young ladies, who have played really good hockey early on this season. We've had some strong wins, but we need to put the focus on our next game and go from there.”
In its first four contests, Radford has used a balanced scoring attack along with a strong defense to post its best start since 1983. The Highlanders have outscored their opponents 16-1. On the offensive side of the field, 11 different players have tallied a goal and a total of 13 have contributed to the scoring attack.
Defensively, Radford posted three shutouts to start the season and just allowed its first goal in its 6-1 victory over William and Mary on Sunday.
Radford takes to the road this weekend for a pair of contests. The Highlander will face off against Towson at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10 and conclude the trip with a 1 p.m. matchup at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, Sept. 12.
