Join Radford University in its celebration of the grand opening of a new-look baseball facility on Friday, April 8 when the Highlanders host VMI in a 6 p.m. game.
Admission to the pre-game festivities, ceremony and baseball game is free. In addition, there will be no admission charge for any Radford baseball game for the rest of the season.
The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with games and activities in the parking lot behind the stadium, and culminate with the grand opening ceremonies and the first game of a Big South series between the Highlanders and the Keydets at 6 p.m.
An open, festival atmosphere for families, children, fans and students will be in the parking lot behind the stadium. A variety of food vendors, an RU bookstore tent, and a number of games and activities will be part of the celebration. For the first 750 fans, a free commemorative item will be distributed to mark the occasion.
Fans will be able to experience new ways to enjoy the sights and sounds of Radford baseball. The grandstands will include 700 red chair-backed seats from dugout to dugout. In addition, fans can also bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the game from a grassy area extending down the left-field line.
Pre-game activities include ceremonial first pitches and welcome statements from members of the university community. The athletics department and baseball program will recognize the individuals who made the ballpark possible and noteworthy Radford University and RU baseball alumni will be introduced.
Following the game, the Highlanders will participate in an autograph session in the parking lot behind the stadium.
The game will mark the Big South home opener for the Highlanders. Radford is perfect at home this season, with a 6-0 record, and has won five of the last six games with their opening night opponent, VMI.
Parking for Friday's celebration is free and will be available in University Lot Z, located at the Dedmon Center's Riverside Entrance. Fans are advised that they should enter the stadium through sidewalk that runs down the middle of the RU Tennis Courts.
ABOUT THE RADFORD UNIVERSITY BASEBALL FIELD PROJECT
Construction at Radford University Baseball Field began during the winter months, and will be completed in time for the grand opening. Eight NCAA Tournament-quality light standards illuminate the field, which is a state-of-the-art playing surface installed last season. The grandstand runs from dugout to dugout, and moves fans closer to the action then ever before, in an intimate ballpark setting along the New River. In addition, a brand-new sound system will improve the quality of the baseball experience.
The new stadium is the first major upgrade to RU Baseball Field since it opened in 1986. The project is entirely privately funded through the Radford University Athletics Club.
