RADFORD, Va. – Andre Jones scored 17 points to lead three Winthrop players in double figures as the Eagles defeated Radford, 77-63, in Big South men's basketball action Thursday evening at the Dedmon Center.
Matt Morgan added 13 points and George Valentine recorded his fifth double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) of the season for the Eagles, who finished the contest shooting 51.9 percent.
Radford (4-21, 1-12 Big South) was led by the freshmen duo of Javonte Green and R.J. Price, who contributed 18 and 14 points, respectively. Chance Smith also recorded double digits with a career-high 10 for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders cut a 24-point deficit to 10 (73-63) on a Price 3-pointer with 49 seconds left, but that's as close as they would get.
Radford shot 50 percent in the second half and was 6-of-9 from long range, but finished the contest shooting just 40.7 percent.
Winthrop (10-14, 7-6 Big South), which held a 25-11 advantage on the glass in the first half, closed the period on a 24-9 run to go into the break up, 38-17.
Both clubs finished with 10 steals.
The Highlanders rebounded better in the second half, but still trailed on the boards, 34-29.
Radford will enjoy a week break before traveling to Gardner-Webb on Feb. 9 for a 7 p.m. contest.
