RADFORD, Va. – Gunning for its first win of the season, Radford women's tennis heads up Interstate 81 to face Washington & Lee at the Duchossois Tennis Center in Lexington, Va. Friday at 3:00 p.m.
Selected as the preseason favorite to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, the Generals are coming off a 2012 campaign where they finished 20-6 overall and registered a 10-0 mark in conference action to claim the program's 10th consecutive ODAC title. W&L reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to Emory, 5-2.
Headlining the returnees are sophomores Sonja Meighan and Meghan Buell. Honored as the ODAC Rookie and Player of the Year, Meighan went on to earn Atlantic Southeast Region Rookie of the Year after notching a 21-7 ledger in singles play and an 18-5 doubles record. The 2011 ITA Southeast Region Singles Champion advanced to the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament quarterfinals, which earned her All-America recognition.
Recording an 11-3 mark in singles and a 21-4 record in doubles, Buell collected first team All-ODAC honors. In the fall, she won the ITA Southeast Region Singles and Doubles titles.
Other key returners for W&L include senior Sallie Griffin, junior Claire Cahill, and sophomores Patricia Kirkland and Allison Hupalo.
Radford stays on the road for its next battle, a Feb. 19 dual at Elon. The Highlanders and the Phoenix square off at 2:00 p.m. from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
