BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomores Gemma Valls and Meg Napolitano both won their third match in a row, but their efforts were not enough as the Radford women's tennis team fell to Campbell, 5-2, Saturday at the James Nisbet Tennis Center.
The Highlanders (1-7, 0-2 Big South) put up a fight at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At the top flight, Taylor Newman and Napolitano were outlasted by the Camels' duo of Tamara Stanic and Karolina Chernaya, 9-7. Coupled with its win at the second slot (8-4), Campbell claimed the doubles point and the 1-0 edge in the match.
Winning at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, the Camels quickly grabbed a 3-0 advantage. However, Valls would get Radford on the board at the top spot, defeating Stanic (6-3, 7-5). With the win, Valls improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Campbell clinched the match at the fifth position as Ewa Telenga gutted out a three-set (6-3, 2-6, 6-1) decision over Taylor Fay.
Napolitano also won her third match in a row as she dispatched Natasha Afridi (1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-0)) to improve to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
RU will venture further south for its spring break trip to the Sunshine State. Up first for the Highlanders are Wesleyan and Fordham on March 12.
