RADFORD, Va. - The Radford men's soccer roster is currently littered with players from all around the world. Yet, two local high school standouts gave Highlander fans in the New River Valley a glimpse at the future as Blacksburg's Garland Smith and Radford's Zach Turk each led their teams in the VHSL Spring Jubilee last week.
"We look for the best people and players to represent our program," RU head coach Marc Reeves said. "These two young men have all the qualities both on and off the field we look for in the recruiting process. We are excited to welcome them to the RU soccer family and look forward to their impact on the continued growth of our program"
Smith finished a distinguished high school career helping lead the Bruins to their second state title in four seasons for head coach Shelley Blumenthal. His senior campaign ended with 13 goals, including a tally in the state championship match at RU's Cupp Stadium. Smith was named to both the Virginia All-State and All-Region first teams in Group AA.
Reeves on Smith:
"Garland is an exceptional athlete with real quickness and true speed. His pace and attacking skill make him a constant threat and fun for fans to watch."
Turk's high school career came to a heartbreaking end as the Bobcats fell in penalty kicks in the semifnal round of Group A. With his team's season on the line, Turk stepped up and buried both of his attempts in the shootout, but in the third round, Radford came up short and lost the duel, 8-7, after a 2-2 tie in regulation and overtime play. Turk's senior campaign came to a close with 15 goals and 15 assists. He will participate in the VHSL Coaches Association All-Star Game in July.
Turk on why he chose Radford:
"I decided to come to Radford because I had the opportunity to get a great education and continue my soccer career close to home. I wanted to be a part of the Radford program because it is headed to great places."
Reeves on Turk:
"Zach has great technique and an ability to keep the ball moving well under pressure. His work ethic and toughness ensures he impacts the game."
The Highlanders open their home season with an exhibition game against Virginia Tech on Saturday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m.
