CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT UVA DUALS

EARLYSVILLE, Va. – Radford opened its season Friday evening at the UVA Duals at Panorama Farms. Liberty joined the Cavaliers and the Highlanders in the three-team meet.

"I am really pleased with this afternoon's competitions," cross country coach Mackenzie Wartenberger said. "Both the Highlander men and women battled heat and a hilly course to notch some great performances. I told both our teams going into this meet we were training through it. I know they were all feeling a hard few weeks of practice, but I was impressed by how close we kept our packs and how well we worked together."

On the men's side, Virginia bested Radford (17-38), while the Flames claimed a 15-40 margin over the Highlanders.

Sophomore Kyle King of the Cavaliers won the men's 4K race with a time of 12:46. Leading the RU pack was Chris Weeks, while Daniel Moniak, Chaz Porter, Joey Hannah and Thomas Keefe rounded out Radford's scoring five.

In the women's race, Virginia posted a 15-40 win over RU, and Liberty notched a 20-35 decision over the Highlanders.

The first six women's runners to finish the race were Cavaliers, paced by Barbara Streheler's 14:17 effort. Emily Marshall paced the Highlanders, with Courtney Rice, Madeline Thomas, Malina Richardson and Courtney Burton rounding out the scoring five.

"Breakthrough performances from Chris and Daniel on the men's side helped set the pace," Wartenberger expressed. "I am very excited for those two. On the women's side, I thought Emily looked amazing today, racing with a lot of strength and toughness. I am thrilled one of our newcomers, Courtney Rice, really stepped up today. Next, we return to training for a couple weeks before we head to Asheville for the UNC Asheville Cross Country Carnival. If today was any indication, we are in for a great season!"

The UNC Asheville Cross Country Carnival will take place Saturday, Sept. 14 in Asheville, N.C. at 9 a.m.
