Softball Splits Doubleheader in Offensive Day at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader Thursday afternoon in conference play at Presbyterian with two offensive outbursts. The Highlanders fell late in the first contest 9-8 but came back with a dominant 11-2 win in game two.

Game 1
The Highlanders first game of the day was the opposite of the series opener just a day before as the two teams were locked in a slugfest that ended in 17 runs across the two teams. Presbyterian gained an early 1-0 edge in the contest, but the Highlanders would respond in a big way in the second inning.

Rachel Smith began the inning with a single and walks by Cassi Barbato and Averee Atkins had the bases loaded. Qween Edmonds was able to score Smith with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at one-all. With two outs, Lexie Roberts had an infield single that reloaded the bases and set the stage for Cori McMillan.

McMillan took full advantage of the opportunity, crushing her first home run of the season for a grand slam that gave Radford a 5-1 lead. Refusing to let the inning end, Abby Wilson and Kari Shedrick single while Smith turned the lineup over with a walk to reload the bases. Laura Thompson and Cassi Barbato used walks to draw two more runs in to make it a 7-1 Radford lead.

Presbyterian would slowly claw back throughout the game, however, scoring runs in the second, third and fifth inning before a grand slam gave them a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Atkins would collect the first hit of her career in the top of the seventh and McMillan picked up her fifth RBI of the game, but it wasn't enough as the team fell 9-8.

Game 2
Radford's offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the second game of the day and got a quality outing from starting pitcher Ellen Palya to seal up a win in the series. With two outs in the first inning, an error by Presbyterian would lead to a two-out rally by the Highlanders that was a precursor for what was to come.

After the error, Wilson doubled to score Shedrick to make it a 1-0 Radford lead. Rachel Smith followed her with a single that scored Wilson. After a walk by Thompson, Barbato singled to center to make it a 3-0 lead before Presbyterian got a chance to bat.

After the Blue Hose scored in the bottom of the first, both teams went scoreless in the second and third innings as Palya settled into the game. Radford struck again in the fourth inning using the long ball to their advantage.

With her first home run of the season out of the way, McMillan homered again. This time it was a three-run shot by the sophomore that put Radford up 6-1 on the Blue Hose. With two outs in the inning, Wilson doubled and Smith hit another homer for the Highlanders that boosted the lead even further to 8-1.

The offense continued to fire as Shedrick led off the sixth inning with her third home run in the last seven days that made it a 9-1 lead. Already with the run-rule lead, Radford added on thanks to RBI singles by Thompson and Atkins. Palya was able to coast to the finish as the Highlanders took home the 11-2 win to finish the series on a high note.
