Mark White
Assistant Track & Field / Cross Country Coach (Sprints, Hurdles, Relays)
Mark White is in his third season at Radford University. White handles the sprinters and hurdles as well as the responsibilities of recruiting coordinator.
He is USA Track & Field Level Two certified in combined events.
In his first two years as an assistant coach every sprint, hurdle and relay record, both indoors and outdoors, has been broken except for one.
The 2009 indoor season saw new school records being shattered by sprinters in every meet. There were new school records set in the 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m, and 400m. The outdoor season wasn’t any different as school records fell in the open 400m and the 4x400 relay record was tied.
Under White’s watch, three of his sprinters advanced to the NCAA Regional and one qualified for the Nationals. Raschad Kelso in the 200m and Olajuwon Jones in the 400m. Jones and Kelso were also members of the 4x400 relay team that also advanced to Regional competition. Freshman Brett Olinger qualified for the USTAF Junior Nationals in the 400m hurdles. On the women’s side, White helped with the emergence of Britney Whittaker, who captured the 800m Big South Championship Outdoor crown and advanced to the Regional.
The 2008 season White’s first, saw immediate results as two relay records fell and the men’s 4x400 team claimed a Big South Title and a NCAA Regional berth.
The men’s team of Wayne Gore, Jones, Gaylon Johnson and Kelso posted a time of 3:14.40 at the Big South Championship and a mark if 3:12.41 at the East Regional.
White came to Radford after spending the past 11 years teaching and coaching at Middlesex County, Virginia. During that time he filled a variety of athletic capacities, including six years as the school’s athletic director. He also served as the head varsity football coach and track & field coach.
Under his guidance, the Middlessex boys track and field program won three consecutive Tidewater District Championships, Region A Championship in 2006 and a state runner-up placing in 2006. White was named the Tidewater District Coach of the Year for three consecutive years (2005, 2006, 2007) and a Region A Coach of the Year in 2006.
White received his Bachelors degree in history from nearby Ferrum College in 1996. He played baseball for the Panthers for four years, where he was a teammate of perennial National League All-Star relief pitcher Billy Wagner. White also served as an assistant coach under Ferrum legend Abe Naff.
During his high school teaching/coaching career, white earned his Master Degree from Ohio University in 2006 in sports science /athletic administration.
White resides in Pembroke with his wife Susan, and daughters Abigail and Annabelle.
